How to Size Your Chandelier

A well-sized chandelier can define a room. Too large, and it overwhelms the space. Too small, and it gets lost. With a few simple guidelines, you can choose a fixture that feels balanced, intentional, and right for the room.

Start With the Room Size

Measure the length and width of the room in feet. Add those numbers together, then convert that total to inches. That number is a good starting point for your chandelier’s diameter.

For example, a room that’s 16 feet by 18 feet = 34. A chandelier around 34 inches in diameter will feel properly scaled. For ceiling height, allow about 2–3 inches of chandelier height for every foot of ceiling height.

Adjust for the Space and Layout

Over a Dining Table: Use about half the width of the table as a guide for chandelier diameter. The fixture should feel centered and proportional to the table – not the entire room.

In Large or Open Spaces: If the room has multiple zones, define the area with a table or rug. You can size the chandelier based on that specific zone rather than the full room.

Multiple Chandeliers: If you’re using more than one fixture over a table, divide the table width by the number of fixtures plus one. This helps maintain proper spacing and proportion.

Rectangular Tables: Choose a rectangular fixture that reflects the table’s shape. A good rule: the fixture width should be about half the table width, and the length should be proportionally shorter than the table.

Don’t Forget Height and Placement

  • In dining rooms, hang the chandelier so the bottom is about 30 inches above the table
  • In hallways or open areas, keep at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor
  • In entryways or stairwells, treat the space as taller than a single story when determining fixture height
  • • These placement details matter just as much as size – they affect both function and overall feel.
